MOTHER TONGUE INFLUENCE AND ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNING IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN SHEEMA DISTRICT

The study was set to examine the mother tongue influence on English language learning in secondary schools in Sheema District and the study was guided by three objectives: To identify the challenges faced by students and teachers in teaching and learning English language in a multilingual context. To examine the effectiveness of strategies used to address the challenges of mother tongue influence on English language learning in secondary schools in Sheema District. To find out the relationship between mother tongue and English language learning in secondary schools in Sheema District. Data was collected using the interview guide and questionnaires from the teachers, students, parents and administrators. The respondents were sampled through purposive and random sampling procedures. The study found out that mother tongue has greatly influenced the learning of English as a second language through language interference, semantics, phonology and syntax.
