Program Description

The Bachelor of Education (Primary) at the University of Saint Joseph Mbarara is a professionally designed undergraduate programme aimed at training competent, creative, and ethical teachers for primary education. The programme equips students with the knowledge, pedagogical skills, and professional values required to effectively teach and manage learning at the primary school level.

The programme covers key areas such as child development, educational psychology, curriculum studies, teaching and learning methods, assessment and evaluation, classroom management, educational technology, inclusive education, and primary school administration. Students also study core primary teaching subjects including literacy, numeracy, social studies, science, and creative arts.

Emphasis is placed on practical training through school practice, internships, and community-based learning, enabling students to apply theory to real classroom situations. Graduates acquire essential skills in lesson planning, learner-centered teaching, classroom organization, assessment of pupil progress, communication, creativity, and the use of modern teaching aids and technologies.

Upon completion, graduates are qualified to work as professional primary school teachers, head teachers, education officers, curriculum developers, school administrators, and education practitioners in both public and private institutions. The programme also provides a strong foundation for further studies and professional development in education and related fields, contributing to improved quality of primary education and national development.

Entry Requirements


  1. A Diploma in Education (Primary) and passed the subjects they intend to pursue for the award of a degree of Bachelor of Education (Primary),
  2. For International students, they should have qualifications equivalent to Diploma in Education (Primary) as equated by NCHE and passed the subjects they intend to pursue for the award of BEP.
