Program Description

The Bachelor of Mass Communication and Journalism at the University of Saint Joseph Mbarara is a multidisciplinary undergraduate programme designed to train competent, ethical, and creative communication professionals for the modern media and information landscape. The programme equips students with strong theoretical knowledge and practical skills in journalism, media production, public communication, and digital media.

Students study core areas such as news writing and reporting, broadcast journalism, print and online journalism, media ethics and law, public relations, advertising, digital media, communication theory, photography, video production, and media research. The programme emphasizes hands-on training through studio work, field reporting, internships, community engagement, and a final year project, enabling students to apply classroom knowledge to real-world media environments.

Graduates of the programme acquire essential skills in writing, editing, reporting, interviewing, storytelling, media production, critical analysis, communication strategy, and ethical decision-making. They are trained to use modern media technologies and digital platforms to inform, educate, and engage diverse audiences.

Upon completion, graduates are well-prepared for careers in journalism and communication-related fields, including roles as journalists, news reporters, editors, broadcasters, public relations officers, communication officers, media producers, content creators, social media managers, corporate communicators, and media researchers in media houses, government institutions, NGOs, and private organizations. The programme also provides a strong foundation for further studies and professional development in mass communication, journalism, and related fields.

Applicants must have obtained at least two (2) Principal Passes at Advanced Level (A-Level) and at least five (5) passes at Ordinary Level (O-Level) obtained in one sitting, or their equivalent.
